DENTAL PROSTHESIS

What Are The Stages Of The Preparation Of A Dental Prosthesis?

First, a measurement is taken in the mouth by means of a tray and an appropriate impression material in order to make the prosthesis. Based on the plaster models obtained from the first measurements, personal trays are prepared, which are more suitable for the mouth than the standard ones and, the measurement with these trays will be more accurate. Wax templates prepared based on the models obtained from the second measurements are arranged in a way ensuring that the lost teeth and other tissues of the patient and, the functions thereof to speak and chew as well as the aesthetic look are back into their normal positions. Wax templates are prepared in a way to fit where the fake teeth are to be located. The fake teeth chosen specially for the respective patient are arranged on the wax templates and then tried in the mouth of the patient. And the prosthesis that are approved by the dentist and patient are manufactured at the laboratory and delivered to the patient. The prosthesis delivered need to be checked frequently at the beginning and then seldom thereafter to ensure that it would not harm the supporting tissues.

How Should One Eat With The Prosthesis?

The patient should eat soft and small bites of good for a certain period until they are accustomed to using it. Both sides of the jaw should be used to chew the food with slow movements. This prevents the prosthesis from being tipped over. After getting accustomed to chewing with the prosthesis, one may proceed with eating normal food.

Should The Prosthesis Be Worn All Day Long?

At the beginning, the prosthesis should be worn during the day and night so that the tissues get accustomed to the prosthesis. After getting accustomed, it is recommended that it is taken out while sleeping so that the tissues under it could rest.

How Should The Prosthesis Be Maintained And Cleaned?

Just like the natural teeth, the prosthesis should be brushed on a daily basis to remove food residues and plaques on it. Brushing is important not only for the cleanliness of the prosthesis but also the health of the mouth tissues. For brushing, such toothbrushes with soft bristles specially designed for prosthesis and, soap may be used. Since the prosthesis is not resistant against impacts, it could be easily broken if it falls down. Therefore, as a measure to prevent it from falling down and being broken, it is better to clean the prosthesis on a towel or over a container filled with water. A prosthesis should not be let be dried when not in use, so that it should be kept in a clean water when it is not being used.

When Should A Prosthesis Be Replaced?

A prosthesis may be broken due to its affiliation with the supporting tissues gets contracted in time. This affiliation may be achieved by means of a lining procedure. If this fails to be achieved, then the prosthesis will become loose, start to irritate and hurt the tissues. A prosthesis may need to be replaced once every 2 to 4 years when the material of which it is made starts to create such an environment suitable for bacterial growth.
